Specimen needs identification

Many thanks if can you help me identify this sound and what might be going on.

Recorded 1990s, underneath my house, out of sight, downtown Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA.

I am assuming it is a rodent but don't know what kind.  Possibly : a house mouse, deer mouse, chipmunk, rat.....or something else?

I also don't know what it was expressing.  Possible distress?  Maybe something else?
